Calm View Clouds

We often think of mixing white plants with other colours, but not white on white - on white. I had a customer in the early years that would only buy white plants.

The thought of creating an all white space wasn't something I had thought about doing before then - so I tried it. Once the blooms came out I really understood the appeal of the white and foliage as a monochromatic look across an area.

As I played with this mix, it became clear that loose or structured plants completely changed the feeling. Both elegant, different. I chose the looser one: a calm elegance that can't be achieved with more colourful blooms.

Profile

Conditions
Part to full sun. Average soil. Zone 4-9.

The vibe: Calm
White on white on white. One colour, loose forms, and a fine grass that keeps it all moving. Nothing competes, so the planting is more settling than show stopping.

The placement: View
Full at ground level, low enough to see across. From a seat or a window you take in the white and your eye carries on to the rest of the yard.

Where it works
A spot you look out over, like beside a patio or path, that has enough room to allow the blooms to spill over the edge.

Full sun, five hours or more. Average to dry. Zone 4 to 9.

Rich jewel tones that complement each other, and a fine-textured grass that keeps the whole space moving. Mid-height, so from a seat or a window your eye takes in the colour and travels past it to the rest of the garden. You're not walled off by what's in front of you.
