It took me a couple of years to realize autumn is a great time to plant.

First - the weather is lovely. But more importantly, the gift you get in May is amazing. I have over 1000 plants in my min-beds now, with more to come. Give autumn planting a try. Your spring self will thank-you.

Late planting means September pinks.

I started these yarrow, dianthus and Jupiter’s beard later than usual so they’re vibrant now, when typically they would be fading. It’s a great reminder that it’s never ‘too late’ to start seeds - it just may mean a different bloom time.

I parked a number of small cubes in these fabric bags in July, but now they need to move on.

These cubes have grown beautifully but now I’ll put them in their own bags so they can each thrive on their own in spring. Still gardening time!

This year I started a new garden in over 500 fabric bags.

It may not look exciting yet, but I can already see how spectacular this will be next year. I think this may top my last garden in its design. And it’s far easier to move things!

We don’t often think of staggering the starts of perennials but some are well suited to it.

This year I got some plants for myself in the garden late - and now I’m enjoying fresh blooms on my Yarrow Summer Berries and Foxglove Foxy. It’s a lovely autumn surprise.

I visited a public garden and was reminded how beautiful Japanese Anemone is.

I think it’s the surprising, spring like soft pink that makes it so striking. Yes, it may take over a space quickly, but at this time of year it feels like that’s OK.

A plant that is "first-year blooming" is often just a preview of the glory to come in future years.

This Jupiter's Beard was started from seed in February is now blooming. I know next season will be a whole spray of them, but for now I’ll appreciate this little pop of colour.

Just like you can wear white after Labour Day you can also garden.

This can be one of the best times to get out in the garden, both to enjoy what you have, and plan for next year. There is something about the late season light, that can make this a special time to enjoy your garden.
