Energized View Jewel
It’s easy to create a bold garden with height. Tall plants naturally demand attention. But this came from a section of my own garden that surprised me because it didn’t need height to hold attention.
I particularly like how the colour combinations remind me of the jewels in my mom's costume jewellery collection. The plants have so much colour and movement that they become a focal point you can see from a distance.
I adjusted the mix so the planting carries from late spring through fall, but the feeling is the same: a low enough planting to see over, and bold enough to draw attention.
Profile
Conditions
Full sun, five hours or more. Average to dry soil. Zone 4-9.
The feeling: Energized
Rich jewel tones that complement each other rather than compete, and a fine-textured grass that adds movement. This planting isn't meant to feel static or safe.
The purpose: View
Mid-height, so from a seat or a window your eye takes in the colour and travels past it to the rest of the garden. You're not walled off by what's in front of you.
Where it works
A spot you sit and look out from. Or at an entry, with two blocks on each side of a path.
